Multimodal Transportation Professional

Position Summary

Our growing firm has an exciting opportunity for a Multimodal Transportation Professional in either our Boston, MA or Lincoln, RI offices. Located in downtown Boston, our Boston office is easily accessible via the MBTA subway and bus systems, bicycle, and foot. McMahon is comprised of progressive transportation planners and engineers who are passionate about multimodal transportation including bicyclists; public transportation vehicles and riders; pedestrians of all ages and abilities; and vehicular safety.

The ideal candidate will have a broad range of experience in transportation engineering or planning and a demonstrated ability to prepare multimodal transportation, client-focused planning and engineering materials. The Multimodal Transportation Professional will work with a team of engineers, planners, and technicians in the overall planning, development, design and implementation of diverse surface transportation projects. The ideal candidate would also have flexibility to work out of the other New England offices.

Primary Duties

  • Develop conceptual and preliminary designs for integrating multimodal elements into roadway and intersection projects
  • Interpret guidelines, procedures and manuals such as NACTO, AASHTO, MUTCD, and other transportation engineering and planning reference materials
  • Evaluate, select and adapt standard techniques, procedures and criteria to complete work on projects
  • Draft transmittals, memos, reports, and meeting minutes
  • Assist in client contact and agency coordination and communication pertaining to specific projects as necessary
  • Assist with data collection programs and performance assessment
  • Provide technical support and guidance to Staff Engineers and Co-ops on an as needed basis
  • Assist in proposal writing and development of marketing materials.
  • Be aware of budget hours vs. time to complete tasks
  • Active participation in at least one professional society/organization

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Passion for multimodal transportation, particularly planning and design of bicycle and pedestrian facilities
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Strong work ethic and desire to learn and grow professionally
  • Experience conducting independent analysis with minimal supervision
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at the same time, both independently and also as an integral part of a team
  • Knowledge of NACTO, AASHTO, MUTCD, and other transportation engineering and planning reference materials
  • Familiarity with MassDOT Separated Bike Lane Planning and Design Guide and Complete Streets policies
  • Familiarity with Federal and State ADA Standards and Guidelines
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience using Computer Automated Design (AutoCAD) and design software (Civil 3D)
  • Experience using Synchro capacity analysis software and VISSIM is a plus
  • Experience with signal design is a plus


The candidate’s education and background must include a Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, civil engineering or related field with a minimum of 4 -10 years of experience in engineering or transportation planning. Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T) or P.E. is a plus.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Work is performed in an office setting. Work requires frequent and prolonged telephone, computer and vehicular use. May occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
